The Mistletoe Bay Trust was formed in 2003 as a result of the Department of Conservation looking for alternatives to managing the Mistletoe Bay Reserve and Campground in Onahau Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound. After negotiating a Control and Management Agreement with DoC, the Trust developed plans to create a sustainable Eco Village facility that would showcase Mistletoe Bay and New Zealand together as a leading venue for conservation, education and sustainability.
The facility offers an experience that is unique in New Zealand, where visitors young and old will learn hands-on how to live sustainably in a coastal ecosystem. The trustees are volunteers with a passion for a sustainable future and a commitment to keeping a small piece of paradise protected and available for everyone.
Mistletoe Bay & Camp Ground now occupies this pristine setting in the breathtaking Marlborough Sounds, showcasing New Zealand's finest qualities—native bush, endemic fauna, clear water, solitude, recreation and peace.
This Enviro Gold 4 Star Qualmark facility is unique in New Zealand. It is much more than a place to stay; it is an experience.
Sustainability and conservation practices at Mistletoe Bay include energy conservation, with all our accommodation double-glazed and heavily insulated, fitted with wetback pellet fires and solar-powered water heating. Water conservation is paramount. "Recycled water" from our high-tech wastewater plant is used to flush all toilets and rainwater is collected from all buildings. All waste is processed carefully or recycled, and organic waste is used on site to fertilise gardens and feed livestock.
Everything at Mistletoe Bay is thoughtfully and deliberately placed to encourage positive, reduced-impact interaction with nature, showing Kiwis and foreign visitors alike that New Zealand is at the cutting edge of environmental awareness.
The Trust's education programme for schools is at an exciting stage of development, with a number of camp programmes offered on site by both resident staff, or by local service providers. Please visit the School Zone section of this website for more details.
