Waste Management

Sustainability

Our eco village is designed to be waste efficient and eventually waste free. Rubbish will all eventually be recycled or processed, and all wastewater is currently processed and recycled.

Your help is essential in achieving these goals. Whilst we have a pack it in, pack it out philosophy, we do provide the opportunity for whare users to sort their waste/rubbish. We view this as essential in developing the necessary understanding of waste recycling and responsible disposal.

We do have a temporary disposal system for rubbish by way of a $2 coin operated skip for non-designated garbage which is located in the campground area. This accepts a number of medium sized plastic rubbish bags or plastic supermarket bags at a time.

Organic waste can be disposed of into clearly marked bins in both the whare and campground kitchens. This is recyled into our two worm farms on-site, or as animal feed.

How do earthworms make compost?

Worms are fascinating creatures, and we put them to work for us at Mistletoe Bay.

Vermicompost is the product of composting using worms to create a mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast.

Vermicast, also known as worm castings, is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by species of earthworm.

Vermicompost is a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer and soil conditioner.
